This is a poster that I have been working on, on and off, for the past two weeks. The original image is of a little church I saw while driving in Montreal, I often stop and take stock photographs of things that I find interesting along the way. It was created in Adobe Photoshop, one of the best image editors on the market today, along with a few plugins I picked up over the years.
The titles were done mostly in Macromedia Fireworks MX, then exported back into Photoshop.

This is the original photograph of the little church in black and white along with a soft filter added to the image. I often strip the colors away in this type of composition. I find that it is easier to modify this way rather than having to deal with colors that can go all weird when you are tinting the many layers.
This is the same image as above but this time a texture has been added to the background by adding a colored photograph of a cement wall and setting the layer blending mode to multiply. This results in a grungy yellow looking image, playing with the layer blending options can give you dramatic looking results. The bottom half of the image was tinted towards the red with a graduated filter from Nik Color Effects.
In this image you can see that I increased the length of the image by approximately 30% and I added a water reflection with the Flood filter by Flaming Pear plugin for Photoshop. Birds flying around the bell tower were added with a brush that I made, the key here is to have them facing in different directions with different sizes and angles to make it look realistic.
This is the final image with the fonts in place. And to give the title more impact I added a starburst above the 'i' in "Unforgiven". I was going to add more things to it but I found from experience that sometimes you have to take a break and stop and put it away for another day to look at it from a fresh perpective. When I did so I realized that it pretty much look finished and adding more stuff would actually make it cluttered and take away from the overall appeal.
This image was not created for anyone in mind, I just wanted to create a Dark-Gothic type of composition. The amazing thing with this photograph is that it pretty much created itself as I added more elements to it and before I knew it, it had the look of a movie poster.
